As demand for direct connectivity with the Sri Lanka peaks, IndiGo has launched its second direct flight to the country, from Chennai to Jaffna – making travel easier for travellers. This service will reduce travel time to just 75 minutes, offering a comfortable and efficient option for both leisure and business travellers.
The launch of the Chennai-Jaffna route marks a significant milestone for IndiGo and further consolidates its position as a leading airline in the region. Jaffna is the airline’s second destination in the island nation after the capital. Colombo and the 34th international destination, according to reports cited by IndiGo, which has taken this step to respond to the growing demand. According to reports, 21,000 passengers flew on the route in just nine months last year.
According to the airline, the new route will strengthen economic and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka, promoting tourism, trade and people-to-people exchange. With daily flights, travellers can choose departure and return times that best suit their schedules.

This announcement comes at a time when India and Sri Lanka are making efforts to enhance connectivity between the neighbouring nations. After four decades, India and Sri Lanka will be connected by a ferry service, marking a milestone in the history of the two countries and their bilateral relations. The reinstated ferry service will connect Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to Kankesanthurai in northern Sri Lanka.
The ferry will reportedly operate daily, with a four-hour journey between the two ports. Offering both ordinary and premium class seating, ticket prices are competitive, especially when compared to air travel options. The Sivaganga cruise has 133 seats in the ordinary class and 27 seats in the premium class. The ticket price for a one-way journey is close to Rs 5,000 for the ordinary class and Rs 7,500 for the premium class. The new ferry terminal at Nagapattinam features modern amenities, including health and security checkpoints.
