The Prime Minister stressed that the progress is crucial to achieve the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 and noted that increased budgetary allocations to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have boosted rail transport in the southern states.
The Meerut City-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express will reduce journey time by about one hour compared to the current fastest service, while the Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil and Madurai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express trains will reduce journey times by over two hours and about one and a half hours respectively.
The Chennai-Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express, one of the three trains inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offers the fastest connectivity to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the country, a senior railway official said.
“The Vande Bharat Chennai-Nagercoil train will cover a distance of 726 km in 8 hours 50 minutes to provide the fastest connection between two destinations. From Nagercoil, Kanyakumari is about 20 km away and people can travel by rail or road,” a Southern Railways statement said.
“There are currently two direct trains from Chennai to Kanyakumari, but they take around 12 hours. Vande Bharat offers a third option, which is the fastest and most comfortable of all,” the statement said, as reported by PTI.
Following its launch on Saturday, its commercial operation will begin on September 1 (Sunday), the official added.
According to Southern Railways, the new train will improve connectivity to major industrial, commercial and tourist centres including Trichy, Madurai, Dindigul and Tirunelveli.
It will depart Chennai Egmore at 5 am and arrive Nagercoil at 1.50 pm, offering halts at seven stations – Tambaram, Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Kovilpatti and Tirunelveli.
