Within hours, Aggarwal’s tweet garnered over 1.9 million views and many people took to the comments section to answer his question.
“The ‘$’ is also an important character in programming languages, such as Perl,” one user noted.
“Only a person who works with MS Excel knows the answer. $ is used to freeze rows or columns in Excel formulas and ₹ cannot do that. That’s why $ is universally used for that purpose. However, you can use ₹ anytime on your computer,” explained another.
“Using $ in global formulas has become the norm due to its wide acceptance, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stand up for our own ₹. Promote the Indian currency, ensure it gets the recognition it deserves in both local and international products,” commented a third.
“Good global products default to USD, but it’s time to prioritize ₹, especially for Indian users,” said a fourth.
