Learn about the health problems caused by contaminated water
More than 200 residents of a society in Noida fell ill after allegedly drinking contaminated waterResidents of Supertech Ecovillage 2 have reported symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains. Residents claim that more than 100 people have fallen ill, however, the local health department has not yet confirmed the number of cases or the cause of the illness.
According to a report by NDTV, a resident of Supertech Ecovillage 2 said, “My son came from a training institute and complained of health problems. He vomited twice at the institute. After some time, my younger son, who is 8 years old, started complaining of health problems.”
He added: “I also returned from office at 9 pm and around 11 pm I felt nauseous. All this is happening due to water pollution.”
Another resident of the association said: “We thought that the children must have eaten something outside and that this was happening because of that. But when we spoke to the people of the association, this number started to increase.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that contaminated water is linked to the transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid fever and polio. “Lack of, inadequately managed or inadequately managed water and sanitation services expose people to avoidable health risks.”
Here, take a look at the health problems that can arise from drinking contaminated water.
Gastrointestinal infections
Contaminated water often contains bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella, which can cause serious gastrointestinal infections. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal cramps leading to dehydration and, in severe cases, life-threatening conditions such as dysentery.
Anger
Drinking water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae can cause cholera, a serious diarrheal disease that causes rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes, leading to dehydration, shock, and even death if not treated promptly.
Hepatitis A and E
Contaminated water may contain viruses such as hepatitis A and E, which cause inflammation of the liver. Symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain. These viral infections can lead to liver failure, especially in people with weakened immune systems or preexisting liver conditions.
Typhoid
Typhoid fever is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi, which is spread through contaminated water. Symptoms of typhoid fever include high fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, such as bleeding or intestinal perforation.
giardiasis
This is an infection caused by Giardia lamblia present in contaminated water. It causes chronic diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Giardiasis can affect digestion and nutrient absorption, which impacts overall health.
Lead poisoning
Drinking water contaminated with lead, often from old plumbing, can cause serious health problems, especially in children. Exposure to lead can also affect brain development, leading to learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and impaired growth. In adults, it can cause kidney damage and high blood pressure.
Arsenic poisoning
When water is contaminated with arsenic, it can become a major health hazard, especially in areas where groundwater is the primary source. Chronic exposure can cause skin lesions and cardiovascular disease, and also increase the risk of certain types of cancer, including skin, bladder and lung cancer. Long-term exposure to arsenic also affects children’s cognitive development.
