Gandhi made these remarks during a virtual meeting with Kerala Congress leaders and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. In a post on X, accompanied by a video clip of the online discussion on relief and recovery efforts, Gandhi said Wayanad was gradually recovering from the impact of the landslides.
“While there is still a lot of work ahead, it is heartening to see communities and organisations coming together to help,” Gandhi was quoted as saying by PTI. He stressed the importance of promoting tourism to help Wayanad recover, and urged that once the rains are over, efforts should focus on revitalising the tourism sector and encouraging visitors.
Wayanad is slowly recovering from the devastation caused by the tragic landslides. While there is still much to be done, it is heartening to see people from all communities and organisations coming together to help.

Gandhi clarified that the landslides affected only a specific part of Wayanad, not the entire region. “Wayanad remains a beautiful destination and will soon be ready to welcome tourists from across India and beyond,” he said.
He also pointed out the need to dispel the myth that Wayanad is an unsafe city as such a perception could hurt its tourism industry. “We need to address several key issues – improving inter-departmental coordination on relief, increasing compensation, resolving rental-related issues, supporting those who lost their livelihoods and mitigating the impact on tourism,” Gandhi added.
The recent disaster has claimed more than 200 lives in Kerala, a state known for its delicate coastal and mountainous ecosystems. Gandhi, who was elected from two constituencies in the Lok Sabha elections, resigned from his Wayanad seat, which will now be contested by his sister Priyanka Gandhi in an upcoming by-election.
