Nearly 21 per cent candidates skipped the UP Police Constable recruitment exam on the first day on Friday even after downloading admit cards, while 61 impersonators and candidates who used unfair means were arrested across the state, UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) officials said.
The exam was held at 1,174 examination centres in 67 of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts under tight security measures that included biometric verification, including fingerprints and facial recognition, six months after the exam was conducted and then cancelled following a question paper leak in February.
The exam will also be held in two shifts on August 24, 25, 30 and 31.
A total of 48,17,441 candidates (48.17 lakh or more than 4.8 million) applied to appear for the written examination for 60,244 posts of UP Police Constables.
A senior UPRPB official confirmed that 79.11 per cent of the candidates appeared for the two shifts of the exam on the first day on Friday. He said that 4,09,720 candidates from the first shift downloaded their admit cards but only 3,21,265 turned up at the examination centres. Similarly, 4,09,880 candidates from the second shift downloaded their admit cards but only 3,27,167 turned up at the examination centres in the second shift, he added.

“Around 78.41 percent of candidates sat the first exam session, held between 10:00 and 12:00, and nearly 79.82 percent sat the second exam session, held between 15:00 and 17:00. In total, 79.11 percent of candidates sat both sessions on Friday,” he said.
“In both sessions on the first day, 20.89 percent of candidates skipped the exam,” he explained.
He said at least 32 impersonators and candidates who used unfair means were arrested in the first shift across the state and 29 others were arrested in the second shift. He said legal proceedings against them are underway.
The board had already instructed around 20,000 suspected candidates, whose Aadhaar authentication could not be processed online, to carry their proper identity documents for verification at the examination centres. They were asked to carry documents including PAN card, driving licence, passport or an original copy of their Aadhaar card for verification.

Comprehensive measures were implemented to closely monitor, register and supervise candidates at each examination centre.
Candidates had to undergo physical searches and security checks using hand-held metal detectors (HHMD).
This time, security was tight as the same exam was held on February 17 and 18 but was cancelled on February 24 following a leak of question papers. 178 FIRs were registered in 41 districts across the state in connection with the question paper leak and over 400 people, including two alleged masterminds, were arrested in Gautambuddhnagar.
