With an aim to generate greater interaction between companies and students in offering internships for better employability chances, the paid internship scheme aims to provide students with government-mandated internship opportunities in the top 500 companies in the country.

To facilitate student choice, the UGC also categorizes in its guidelines the types of internships that students should prefer taking into account their long-term goals. According to the UGC, there are two categories of internships.

Research Oriented
Students who wish to acquire skills and work experience can opt for employability-oriented internships. Students who wish to acquire formative research tools and methodologies can opt for employability-oriented internships.
