As Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner, you are bound to come across pictures and videos of many Ganesh temples on your social media. But did you know that there is an idol of Lord Ganesh on the edge of a volcano? There is a region in Indonesia, Mount Bromowhich has a 700-year-old idol of Lord Ganesh. For the unversed, Indonesia is home to a large population of the Hindu community. The entire country has multiple temples dedicated to Lord Ganesh and the citizens worship him there with much devotion. In addition to this, the idol of Ganesh, sitting on the volcano, is said to have mega powers – people believe that Lord Ganesh protects them from the volcano’s eruptions.
Meaning of the idol
The idol is believed to have been installed by the ancestors of the Tengger massif tribe around 700 years ago. Even today, people make offerings to the Ganesh idol, praying for protection from such eruptions. This has become a strict tradition. Along with worshipping the idol, flowers and fruits are offered. It is believed that if this is not done, the volcano will erupt and consume the local people.
