It is worth noting that some of the candidates on hold achieved higher scores in the Common University Entrance Examination (CUET) than those to whom the court granted relief.
“We hope that all students will get some relief. We will not let students suffer and we are trying to find a solution to this. The end result will be positive,” a senior university official told ToI. DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh welcomed this first step and said, “I am happy that these candidates have been given relief.”
Students remain anxious:
However, a candidate who scored above 780 in the CUET is still anxiously waiting for an update on the status of her application, which is still “pending the decision of the convener”. The uncertainty and delay in the process has left her questioning the fairness of the system. “We should also get some relief or at least the option to upgrade the category. If nothing happens, her prospects of getting into another university will also disappear,” said the candidate’s mother.
Another candidate said: “Will we have to go to court to get what we deserve, even after following due process? As the academic year approaches, our fate is at stake. Our future educational prospects depend on the university’s decision.”
St. Stephen vs. DU:
During the hearing, St Stephen’s maintained that it had only three seats for the BA programme, while DU had allocated 19 seats for the course. However, DU reiterated that the institution was “obliged to comply with the allocation list issued by the university”.
This is not the first time that St. Stephen’s College and Delhi University have been at odds. They were previously involved in a legal dispute over the admission process After the university insisted on conducting interviews for all applicants, giving them 15% weightage in addition to the CUET score, the university had allowed them to conduct interviews for students in the 50% reserved category, but not for those in the general category.
