Supreme Court stays Supreme Court verdict, asks UP government to prepare fresh selection list of 69,000 assistant teachers
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Allahabad High Court’s order asking the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers in the state.
The top court also stayed the High Court verdict nullifying the selection lists of assistant professors issued by the state authorities in June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates.
While staying the apex court verdict, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra also issued notices to the state government and others, including the secretary of the UP Basic Education Board, on a petition filed by Ravi Kumar Saxena and 51 others.
The top court said it will grant a final hearing on the matter and asked the lawyers of the parties involved to submit brief written notes not exceeding seven pages.
The court said it will set the petition for hearing in the week beginning Sept. 23.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati appeared for the Uttar Pradesh government.
In August, the Supreme Court ordered the state government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers in the state.
A division bench of the high court had issued the order while disposing of 90 special appeals filed by Mahendra Pal and others challenging a single-judge order dated March 13 last year.
The Supreme Court had directed that while preparing the new selection list, any adverse impact on serving assistant professors should be mitigated by allowing them to complete the current academic term. This is aimed at avoiding disruptions in the education of students, it had said.
