Ravenshaw University of Odisha History
T. E. Ravenshaw, Commissioner of Odisha from 1865 to 1868, played an important role in the development of the state. On 20 January 1868, the middle school was upgraded to a college in 1876 and named after Ravenshaw. Honours courses were introduced in 1912; the postgraduate course in English was started with a generous grant from the Rani of Sonepur in 1922.
Considering the historical importance of the university, the Odisha government joined the movement on 15 November 2006.
Thomas Edward Ravenshaw was a British civil servant appointed as the Commissioner of Odisha in 1865 and promoted education in Odisha. He supported primary, secondary, technical and female education. He also supported medical education by establishing a medical college in Cuttack along with Dr. W.D. Stewart.
However, some historians also hold him responsible for the devastating Odisha famine of 1866, which killed around 300,000 people. Experts suggest that Ravenshaw’s mismanagement led to such a dire situation in the state.
The Union Education Minister highlighted the fact and said, “People of Odisha as well as intellectuals should reflect on the fact whether we need an institute named after Ravenshaw Saheb, during whose tenure the ‘Na’ Anka Durbhikshya (devastating famine of 1866) occurred in Odisha. What did the administrative officials do during the famine in Odisha? Is the person who helped torment the Odia people a matter of pride for us?”
