While the Prime Minister Narendra ModiModi’s visit to Brunei focused on trade and energy discussions, and what piqued the interest of luxury-loving globetrotters was the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, where Sultan Hassanlal Bolkiah hosted Modi for a grand lunch to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The grandeur of the largest palace in the world
However, it was the majesty of the Istana Nurul Iman Palace that really captured the imagination of luxury enthusiasts.
Known as the “Palace of the Light of Faith,” the Istana Nurul Iman is a true marvel. Covering an area of 200,000 square meters, it holds the title of the largest residential palace in the world, a distinction confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records. The palace features 1,788 rooms, including 257 bathrooms, and a banquet hall that can accommodate up to 5,000 guests. A unique feature is its own mosque, which can accommodate around 1,500 worshippers.
The palace also includes a car park for 110 cars, a stable for 200 polo ponies (with heated facilities), five swimming pools and 44 staircases. Adding to its appeal are the 38 varieties of marble used in its construction, which contribute to its stunning splendour. The price of the palace? A staggering $1.4 billion.
Architecturally, the palace is a testament to Brunei’s Islamic heritage and Malay traditions, with a white and gold exterior topped by gilded domes. The interiors, designed by Khuan Chew (also known for Dubai’s Burj Al Arab), feature a $70 million Renoir painting. The central dome, adorned with 22-carat gold, is the palace’s most striking exterior feature.
Commissioned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1981 and completed in 1984 by Filipino architect Leonardo Locsin and Ayala Corporation, the Istana Nurul Iman remains a symbol of opulence and architectural grandeur.
