The company said Monday it was the youngest company in a group that includes some of the most established names in Earth observation worldwide. The other companies include BlackSky Geospatial Solutions, Herndon, Virginia; ICEYE US, Irvine, California; MDA Geospatial Service, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada; Planet Labs Federal, Arlington, Virginia; Satellogic Federal, Davidson, North Carolina; Teledyne Brown Engineering, Huntsville, Alabama; and The Tomorrow Companies, Boston.
Under this contract, Pixxel will provide NASA, the U.S. government, and its academic partners with hyperspectral Earth observation data, further strengthening stewardship. Earth science research and enforcement activities. With the ability to capture data across hundreds of narrow wavelengths, Pixxel’s datasets can reveal granular insights into climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, resource management and more, the company said.
“Being selected for this NASA contract is a monumental achievement for Pixxel and further validates that hyperspectral imaging will be critical to the future of Earth observation from space and will allow us to truly build a health monitor for the planet,” said Awais Ahmed, co-founder and CEO of Pixxel.
Pixxel’s upcoming launch includes Fireflies, its 5-meter resolution hyperspectral satellites, which will be the highest resolution hyperspectral satellites ever launched, according to the company. These satellites will capture data in more than 250 spectral bands, offering more comprehensive coverage with a 40 km swath width and a 24-hour revisit frequency anywhere on the planet.
In addition to the six satellites to be launched soon, Pixxel plans to expand its constellation to 24 satellites to make hyperspectral data commercially available and accessible to stakeholders across industries and governments. This will enable them to gain real-time, actionable insights to inform decision-making, improve natural resource management and increase environmental resilience, the company said.
