Indian cuisine is not complete without flatbreads, and British pop singer Zayn Malik has made his preference clear. In a recent collaboration with Instagram page Diet Paratha, Malik declared his love for parathas, stating: “Paratha, it’s just better.” But how do parathas and rotis compare in terms of health?
Preparation and nutrition
Rotis are typically made from whole-grain flour and cooked in a dry pan, making them a lighter, lower-calorie option. Their simplicity means less fat and calories. Parathas, on the other hand, are richer; they are often topped with ghee or butter and may contain fillings such as potatoes, paneer, or lentils. These additions make parathas more flavorful, but also more calorie-dense.
Roti vs Paratha: Which is a Healthier Alternative?
While rotis are generally considered healthier due to their lower fat content and simplicity, parathas can also be nutritious. The healthiness of either flatbread depends on the preparation methods. To prepare a healthier paratha, use a minimal amount of oil or ghee and infuse it with nutritious fillings.
Which has greater nutritional value?
To improve the nutritional profile of rotis and parathas, consider adding buttermilk, dal (lentil) water or vegetable puree to the dough. This can increase the protein and fibre content. Opting for multigrain flour or mixing millets like ragi, bajra or jowar can also boost the nutritional value. These grains are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals.
For parathas, using fillings such as green leafy vegetables (spinach, methi), paneer, tofu or non-starchy vegetables (carrots, beans) adds vitamins, minerals and fibre while keeping calories in check.
While Zayn MalikConsumer preference leans towards the indulgent paratha, and health-conscious diners can enjoy both rotis and parathas if they choose ingredients and preparation methods carefully.
