Google has expanded the capabilities of its navigation feature, Google Maps, to its wearable devices. A report suggests that the tech firm recently introduced the Pixel Watch 3, which is equipped with offline Google Maps support and will soon be available on all other WearOS devices. This feature of the smartwatch will help users navigate without an internet connection. Google Maps users rely quite heavily on the feature when they travel to inaccessible places and can download directions when there is no internet available.
The new feature is available in Google Maps for Wear OS Beta 11.140. 0701.W on the Pixel Watch 2 and is expected to be rolled out to other Wear OS watches as well. After updating to the Beta, Google Maps users will find a banner that reads “Offline maps from your phone are automatically downloaded to your watch.” The app will also highlight a new Offline Maps tab located above the Settings selection. The report says that in addition to syncing any offline maps that are available on the smartphone, the watch app will inevitably download a map of the user’s area.
Additionally, the new tool will also offer users information on how much storage a downloaded offline map uses on their devices and allow them to delete maps with a single click. However, offline maps will not provide the same amount of tools as online maps, but will provide a reliable backup for people going to new or remote areas. Lately,
Google has launched six new tools for its Maps feature for users in India. It includes AI features to avoid narrow roads, aerial navigation, integration of electric vehicle charging stations, metro ticket booking, and notification of road closures. Google Maps will now highlight flyovers along with suggested routes in 40 cities in India, helping drivers better prepare for the upcoming journey.
The tech giant has also collaborated with local specialists to curate a list of suggested places in ten major cities and tourist spots to enhance users’ exploration experience. These tools can be used on iOS, Android, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
