Days after the rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata, the National Medical Commission, National Center for Medicine has issued a notice to all medical schools and institutions. The Commission has directed universities to develop a policy for a safe working environment within university and hospital campuses. NMC urged that the campus be made safe for all staff members including faculty members, students and resident doctors.
As mentioned earlier, the NMC’s warning comes in the wake of an alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. Many resident doctors working in hospitals across the country are on strike in protest against the incident. The warning mentions the fact that incidents of violence against doctors in medical colleges have been reported in the recent past.
“All medical schools are requested to develop a policy for a safe working environment within the school campus and hospital for all staff members, including faculty, medical students and resident doctors,” reads the notice issued by NMC.
The notice mentions in particular that campuses and hallways should be well lit at night, to ensure that staff can walk safely from one place to another. It also mentions that all sensitive areas should be covered by surveillance cameras.
“Security arrangements, including adequate security personnel (male and female), should be put in place at the OPD, wards, casualty, labour rooms, hostels, residences and other open areas in the medical college and hospital campuses,” the notice added. “A detailed report of action taken on any incident of violence should be invariably submitted to the National Medical Commission within 48 hours of the incident,” the notice said.
