The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a new assessment pattern for Class 12. The pattern suggests that Class 9, 10 and 11 results should be included in the Class 12 board results, news agency ANI reported, citing the NCERT report.
The report, titled “Establishing Equivalence among Education Boards,” which proposes changes, was published last month. This involves a progressive assessment approach. for grades 10 and 12, where the new framework splits the academic year into two terms. Grade 12 board results must now include grades from grades 9, 10 and 11, according to the report’s recommendations.
In addition, it was noted that the weighting of formative and summative grades will be progressively adjusted from Grades 9 to 12, with more emphasis on summative assessment as students move through the grades. The report states: “The weighting of formative and summative grades will be progressively adjusted from Grades 9 to 12, with increasing emphasis on summative assessment as students move through the grades.”
The report says the new assessment model will employ a comprehensive approach that balances formative (continuous) and summative (final) assessment methods to provide a holistic view of student progress.
By emphasizing formative and summative assessments with different weighting distributions, the framework suggested: “Specifically, Class 9 features a 7 percent formative and 30 percent summative split, Class 10 an equal 50 percent split. formative and summative division“In class 11, the distribution is 40 percent formative and 60 percent summative, and in class 12, the distribution is 30 percent formative and 70 percent summative,” ANI reported.
The suggested assessment framework proposes assessing students’ cumulative performance over the years on the final Grade 12 exam result. It suggests a weighting of 15 percent for Grade 9, 20 percent for Grade 10, 25 percent for Grade 11, and 40 percent for Grade 12.
The proposed two-term division for grades 10 and 12 will include classroom assessments using HPC, portfolio assessments, self-assessments, peer assessments, teacher observation, group work, and laboratory activities. In addition, the second term will include project work, live presentations of work, and group discussions.
