Dehydration causes an increase in blood glucose levels, which makes you urinate frequently, which worsens your health problems.
Rainy weather presents many challenges for people with diabetes. According to experts, hot and humid weather creates a number of health problems as it causes blood sugar levels to rise significantly and makes it difficult to control. You may also be at a higher risk of heat exhaustion.
So when the weather gets hot, mainly due to the humidity in the air, it’s very important to closely monitor your blood sugar levels and watch for possible symptoms that your body isn’t handling the heat very well.
According to Dr Mayank Lodha Seth, chief pathologist at Redcliffe Labs, the changing weather also triggers cravings for junk food, which is a major warning sign in diabetes. “Changing seasons can be especially tough for people with diabetes. While summers bring relief from the scorching heat, for people with diabetes, increased humidity, fluctuating temperatures and more intense cravings for fried and junk food can significantly increase the risks of blood sugar levels,” Dr Seth told Times Now.
How does humidity affect people with diabetes??
Humidity can make you feel tired and sluggish and negatively affects the way diabetes affects your body. People with diabetes become dehydrated more quickly than others. Some signs include:
- Fatigue
- Decreased urination
- Increased thirst
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Dry mouth and eyes
- Low blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
According to doctors, dehydration causes a sudden spike in blood glucose levels, which makes you urinate frequently, which worsens health problems. On top of that, you are also more vulnerable to heat exhaustion because diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves, including the nerves to your sweat glands, so you may not be able to cool your body as efficiently as it needs to.
Sweat does not evaporate as well as it would in drier conditions, making it extremely difficult to stay cool, which increases blood glucose levels.
Ways to control diabetes during monsoon
According to Dr. Seth, while managing diabetes during the rainy season may seem overwhelming, “it is quite simple,” he said. “With a little awareness, some necessary precautions, timely care and regular exercise, one can navigate this season with confidence,” he added.
Some of the necessary care tips during monsoon season include:
Maintain your hydration levels
Temperature changes can significantly reduce water consumption, and excessive sweating due to increased humidity affects blood sugar control. That’s why setting reminders and drinking at least 3-4 liters of water a day is essential for health.
Eat low glycemic index foods
“It is always essential to monitor the diet, regardless of the season, to ensure that blood sugar levels are within the required range,” said Dr. Seth. Seasonal fruits and vegetables and millet bread have low glycemic indexes and are a good guide to health.
Take special care of your feet
Puddles, wet surfaces and stagnant water can make you more prone to foot infections. Therefore, it is necessary to check your feet, keep them dry and wear suitable footwear for the rainy season to avoid any risk of worsening your health condition.
Say a resounding no to street food
Cravings and monsoon rains go hand in hand, but they get worse when combined with unhealthy street food. The use of low-quality oil, added calories and failure to maintain hygiene levels make it unhealthy. “Instead, it will be beneficial if you prepare the same dish at home with better hygiene and low-calorie variants to satisfy your cravings,” added Dr Seth.
Stay active
It is essential, especially during the rainy season. Don’t let the rain push you into a sedentary lifestyle; instead, prepare ahead of time with your indoor exercise routine. Staying active is the key to ensuring overall well-being.
