Mohsin Khanan actor known for his role in the daily soap opera ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’, recently opened up about his health issues. In an interaction with the media, he revealed that he developed a fatty liver and last year had a slight myocardial infarction“I didn’t tell anyone. It had become quite serious. I was hospitalised for a while and we changed hospitals for treatment. But now everything is under control,” he said.
Mohsin was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. “You can develop fatty liver even without drinking alcohol. It just happens without you realizing it, maybe because our sleeping patterns are not right. That’s what happened,” he said.
What is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease?
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, often called NAFLD, is a liver problem that affects people who drink little or no alcohol. In NAFLD, too much fat builds up in the liver. It is becoming more common due to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD is often asymptomatic, but it can progress to more serious conditions such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and even cirrhosis.
Can non-alcoholic fatty liver disease cause a heart attack?
Dr Niranjan Hiremath, Associate Professor, Senior Consultant in Cardiovascular and Aortic Surgery and Surgical Director, Apollo Aortic Programme, shares that the incidence of heart attacks among younger individuals, particularly those in their 30s and 40s, is becoming increasingly common, driven by lifestyle factors and the rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
“Cardiovascular events, traditionally seen in older adults, now affect younger people due to poor dietary choices, sedentary behavior, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions such as insulin resistance and high cholesterol. NAFLD, characterized by non-alcohol-related fat buildup in the liver, disrupts metabolism and contributes to the development of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attacks. Stress, lack of sleep, and smoking further exacerbate these risks, highlighting how early lifestyle choices can lead to significant cardiovascular problems,” said Dr. Niranjan.
How to prevent a heart attack at age 30?
Dr. Niranjan shares that to prevent heart attacks, especially among younger adults, making significant lifestyle adjustments is essential.
– Prioritizing a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while cutting back on processed foods loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats is a key component.
– Regular exercise is equally crucial: doing moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes most days can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
– In addition, controlling stress, getting enough sleep and avoiding smoking are essential to maintaining cardiovascular health.
