Goal Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will notify Brazilian users about how their personal data can be used to train generative intelligence. artificial intelligence (AI). This decision responds to a request from the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). Starting Tuesday, Brazilian users will receive notifications by email and through the Facebook and Instagram platforms, informing them about Meta’s data usage policies. Users will also have the option to opt out, which will prevent their data from being used to train AI systems.
The move comes after the ANPD temporarily suspended Meta’s new privacy policy in July due to concerns about the use of personal data for AI training. However, the suspension was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to issue clear disclosures about its data use practices.
In addition to the privacy policy suspension, Meta had also suspended the use of its generative AI tools in Brazil, including the popular AI-generated stickers on WhatsApp, which is particularly significant given that Brazil is WhatsApp’s second-largest market. Meta made this decision while in talks with the ANPD to resolve concerns about how generative AI uses user data.
When asked if AI tools would be reinstated after the suspension was lifted, Meta did not confirm any immediate plans to resume these services. Instead, the company reiterated that the suspension was initially implemented to address ANPD’s concerns.
This situation highlights the growing scrutiny on how tech companies handle personal data, particularly in the context of AI development. Brazil’s regulatory measures underscore the growing global emphasis on data privacy and the need for transparency in the use of AI-related data. Meta’s compliance with ANPD’s demands illustrates the challenges tech giants face in navigating different regulatory landscapes and the need to adapt their policies to meet local data protection standards.
