Here’s what happened: Hackers took over McDonald’s Instagram page and posted a misleading message claiming that the fast-food giant was giving away free cryptocurrency. The post included a link to a fraudulent website designed to steal users’ personal information and cryptocurrency wallet details. Thousands of people fell for the scam and shared their sensitive information and wallet credentials, leading to significant financial losses.
The malicious post, which has since been deleted, included offensive language and a message from the scammers. It read: “Sorry black, India_X_Kr3w just scammed you. Thanks for the $700,000 in Solarium“This offensive and misleading message was intended to humiliate victims and boast about their ill-gotten gains.
McDonald’s responded to the incident with a statement saying that it was “aware of an isolated incident affecting our social media accounts earlier today.” The company assured the public that it had resolved the issue and apologized for any offensive language posted during the attack.
This type of scam is known as a “rug pull.” In the world of crypto and NFTs, a rug pull occurs when scammers create a new project, promote it to attract investors, and then suddenly abandon the project or disappear with the investors’ money.
