Schools in Manipur to remain closed tomorrow
Imphal: Schools in Manipur will remain closed on September 7 amid escalating violence and unrest after a missile attack killed one person on Friday. Directorate of Education issued an order stating that all government, private and central schools will remain closed to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
“In view of the unrest and the prevailing situation in the state and keeping in view the safety of students and teachers, all government, government-aided, private and central schools in the state shall remain closed from 7th September, 2024,” the order read.
“All zonal education officers of the Education Department-Schools of Manipur are hereby directed to inform all concerned under their jurisdiction and take necessary action accordingly,” it added.
Missile attack kills 1 person
The move comes at a time when the state is facing heightened tension following the recent drone and gun attacks that claimed civilian lives and left several others injured. Unknown armed groups on Friday fired a missile at the residence of late former Chief Minister M. Koireng on Sendra Road in Moirang, Manipur, resulting in one death and three injuries.
The deceased was identified as Rk. Rabei, 70, of Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai. Rabei was reportedly preparing for the Asti ceremony at the former Chief Minister’s residence when the missile attack took place.
Three other people were injured during the attack, although their identity and health status have not yet been revealed. The armed group responsible for the missile attack is unknown and local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Drone attacks continue
On Thursday, PTI reported that a section of residents of Senjam Chirang in Manipur were forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in a nearby community hall after bombs dropped from a drone injured three members of the family of a local resident two days ago.
The first bomb pierced the roof of the 65-year-old farmer’s house, injuring his daughter. Minutes later, another bomb fell from the sky, injuring him and his son, PTI reported.
Watham Gambhir said the explosive that blew through the roof of his house was the second of three bombs dropped from a drone on Monday night at his home. The first damaged his cowshed, which was empty, and the third bomb injured him and his son, who took shelter under a tree after fleeing their home in Imphal West district.
The use of the small, remote-controlled flying machine as a weapon was first observed on Sunday in Manipur, in Koutruk village in Imphal West district. Two people were killed and nine others injured in the attack, which also involved the use of firearms. Drones were again used the next day in Senjam Chirang, about 3 km away.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has termed the dropping of bombs on civilians and security forces using drones as an act of terrorism. The state government has imposed restrictions on the import of drones or their components.
“On Sunday we became worried when we heard the drones buzzing. We also heard that bombs had been dropped on Koutruk. Our village became a target the next day,” Gambhir said.
