Medical College Director RG Kar resigns following student protests
Amid ongoing protests in response to the recent rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata, the director of RG Kar College of Medicine Dr Sandeep Ghosh has not only resigned from his university post but also from his government position. The gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital has sparked a nationwide uproar.
Doctors at several hospitals in India have announced an indefinite strike against the horrific incident. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association is protesting in front of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College over the rape and murder in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, ten government hospitals in Delhi have gone on an indefinite strike, suspending all elective services on Monday. Participating in the strike are Maulana Azad Medical College, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, GTB, IHBAS, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Hospital.
The move comes in response to a call by the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) after a female postgraduate doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata while on duty.
