Robotic hip replacement surgery is not only faster and more innovative, but it is minimally invasive and results in higher patient satisfaction.
The hip joint is one of the most heavily used areas of the body, and if damaged, it can lead to extreme pain, discomfort, and immobilization. However, to improve function, hip replacement surgery is performed to remove the damaged sections of the hip joint and replace them with parts usually constructed of metal, ceramic, and very hard plastic. Also known as total hip arthroplasty, hip replacement surgery has evolved from traditional surgery to robotic surgery, which is not only faster and more innovative, but is minimally invasive, impressively precise, and has higher patient satisfaction.
However, patients considering the procedure often have doubts. “A common concern is that the technology is too new or unproven. However, robot-assisted procedures have been carried out successfully for many years and there are multiple studies proving their efficacy and safety,” Dr Mayank Pathak, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and joint replacement surgeon at Manipal Hospital, told Times Now.
According to Dr. Pathak, the latest technology aims to improve precision, allowing surgeons to plan and execute procedures more accurately, potentially leading to better outcomes and faster recovery.
What are the concerns regarding robotic hip replacement surgery?
Dr. Pathak says that most patients who need hip replacement surgery are concerned about the possibility of complications such as the risk of infection, bone fractures, compatibility of robotic technology, and implant performance. However, Dr. Pathak says, “While there is always some risk associated with surgery, using robotic assistance reduces the chance of certain problems such as irregular leg length or weak implant alignment.
Another question that is frequently raised is the possibility of robots replacing surgeons. However, experts say that a robot is only a tool that supports the surgeon, who maintains full control of the process. “The technology provides real-time information and ensures that the substitute is placed in the best possible position, but the surgeon’s experience is what guides the entire procedure,” he said.
A robotic hip replacement is the same as a traditional hip replacement, where the surgeon removes the damaged tissue from the hip and replaces it with an artificial joint. The difference is that it is performed with the help of a robotic arm, which allows for greater precision.
“The robotic arm does not perform the surgery on its own, but acts as a guide and helps the surgeon follow the pre-established plan. This means more precise incisions and optimal positioning,” said Dr. Pathak.
Why should you opt for robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery?
For those who suffer from hip pain that interferes with their daily activities and have not found relief with non-surgical options, robotic hip replacement surgery may be an appropriate option. If a person qualifies for a traditional hip replacement, they are likely also a candidate for a robotic-assisted hip replacement.
Some Benefits of robotic hip replacement The surgery includes:
Better placement of prosthesis
The precision of the robotic intervention ensures that the new hip joint is positioned exactly where it should be. According to experts, correct placement is crucial for the longevity of the prosthesis, helping it to function well for many years to come.
Less bone and blood loss.
Because the robotic system is precise, the surgeon only needs to make minimal cuts, which means less bone and blood loss, making for easier surgery and often a faster recovery.
