The Advanced Centre for Materials Sciences (ACMS) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur organized the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Academic Workshop on ‘Technical Advances and Role of Standardization in Powder Metallurgical Processes and Products’ in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur and Indian Institute of Metals.
The workshop was attended by industry experts, academics and researchers who discussed the latest developments and the key role of standardisation in powder metallurgy.
Professor Anish Upadhyaya, Director, ACMS at IIT Kanpur, delivered the welcome address and acted as the workshop coordinator.
Kantesh Balani, Head, Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Prof. AK Singh, Professor in-charge of TechnoPark at IIT Kanpur, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and adherence to standards to advance the field of powder metallurgy.
Swagat Bhandari, the nodal officer of the newly established Translational Research Initiative at IIT Kanpur, shed light on strategies to synergize activities to ensure smooth translation from research or prototype stage to industrial adoption and production.
A press release issued by IIT Kanpur said that the morning session featured interesting presentations from representatives of leading industries.
Attendees included Mahesh Nipanikar, Technical Director, Hoganas India, V. Sadafal and S. Biradar, Deputy Managing Directors, Emitec Technologies India Pvt Ltd., and Rajesh Bhatia, Managing Director, RVB Shorelube Industry Pvt. Ltd.
The session was followed by a tour of the ACMS facilities, which gave participants a closer look at the cutting-edge research being carried out at IIT Kanpur, the release said.
The 21st Technical Meeting of the Sectional Committee (MTD25) on Powder Metallurgical Materials and Products was held in the afternoon session.
Meanwhile, the afternoon session featured a series of six technical lectures, attended by over 70 participating students, staff and faculty.
G. Ram Sai Kumar, Scientist and Deputy Head, Department of Metallurgical Engineering, BIS, inaugurated the session with a lecture on “Role of BIS and Standardisation in Powder Metallurgy”.
He stressed the importance of standardisation to maintain consistent quality and support innovation in powder metallurgy.
Dr. Mayadhar Debata, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneshwar, spoke on “Development of Non-Ferrous Alloys through Powder Metallurgy” with special focus on strategic applications.
Other speakers at the session included Dr Pradyut Sengupta (Senior Scientist, CSIR-IMMT), Dr Gururaj Telasang (E-Scientist, ARCI Hyderabad), Dr Deepak Pattanayak (Principal Scientist, CSIR-CECRI), Professor Anish Upadhyaya (IIT Kanpur) and Anshu Bhatia (Managing Director, Camstar Defence India Pvt Ltd).
