What do the RBI guidelines say?
As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.
In addition, Sundays and national or regional holidays are part of the official list of holidays.
In September, banks will remain closed for 15 days due to various festivals and celebrations.
Will banks be closed today for Ganesh Chaturthi?
On September 7, banks in several states across India will be closed in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi, even though it falls on the first Saturday of the month.
The states affected by this closure include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Goa. However, banks in other states will remain open.
Below are the specific bank holidays for September:
- September 7: Ganesh Chaturthi (regional)
- September 14: Second Saturday; also observed for Karma Puja and first Onam
- September 16: Id-e-Milad (affecting Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and others)
- September 17: Indrajatra/Id-e-Milad (Sikkim and Chhattisgarh)
- September 18: Lhabsol (Sikkim)
- September 20: Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi (Jammu and Srinagar)
- September 21: Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day (Kerala)
- September 23: Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji (Jammu and Srinagar)
The RBI holiday list is formulated under the Negotiable Instruments Act and covers guidelines for Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and Closing of Accounts.
Although Ganesh Chaturthi is a regional holiday affecting several states, it does not lead to nationwide closure of banks.
