SUMMARY
Lord Ganesha is the God of Wisdom. Did you know that modaks symbolize the reward of wisdom? Modaks are steamed dumplings with an outer crust of rice flour and a filling of jaggery and coconut. They are smeared with hot ghee before serving.
WHY DOES LORD GANESHA LIKE MODAK? The Devas once visited Shiv-Parvati and presented her with a modak. Goddess Parvati came to know that whoever ate this modak would become knowledgeable in all scriptures, science, art and writing. So she wanted her two sons (Ganesha and Kartikeya) to have it. Ganesha and Kartikeya did not want to share the modak and Parvati decided to give them a test: whoever proved his worth and walked around the world three times would get the sweet. Kartikeya flew away on his peacock while Lord Ganesha walked around his parents. Goddess Parvati gave him the modak and that is how he became fond of it.
