The Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh. It is celebrated by Hindus for its heritage and spiritual significance. Devotees from all over the country visit the temple to seek blessings and in the hope of having their wishes granted.
1. The Richest Temple:
Siddhivinayak Temple is one of the richest temples in the world. This temple has been transformed from a small brick-built shrine to a renovated building thanks to the generous donation of a wealthy woman, Deubai Patil.
Today, the temple has been meticulously renovated with exotic sculptures and a gold-plated inner sanctum. Siddhivinayak is known to have received donations of up to 100 million. This shows the faith that people have in the god of wisdom, Lord Ganesh.
2. Ganesh trunk facing right:
Usually, idols of Lord Ganesh have the trunk facing left; however, the idol in Siddhivinayak temple has the trunk pointing towards the right direction. The Ganesh with the trunk facing right is called Siddhi Vinayaka. The trunk on the right side symbolizes liberation from all worldly desires and attainment of Moksha.
The idol of Lord Ganesh at Siddhivinayak temple has been carved from a single black stone. The idols of Riddhi and Siddhi, goddesses of success, prosperity and wealth, are placed on either side of the 2.5-feet-tall idol of Lord Ganesh.
3. Hanuman Idol:
In 1952, an idol of Lord Hanuman was found near the Siddhivinayak Temple. When devotees saw it, they immediately informed the head priest about the temple. The then head priest brought the idol of Hanuman inside the temple and built a small temple for it.
After that, a shrine for the idol of Lord Hanuman was built inside the temple. Nowadays, many devotees come to Siddhivinayak and also seek the blessing of Lord Hanuman.
4. The third eye of Lord Ganesh:
The idol of Lord Ganesh at the Siddhivinayak temple has a third eye, just like Lord Shiva. The eye symbolizes divine perception and intuition. According to Hindu mythology, the third eye grants the ability to see extraordinary things, representing awareness and the power to perceive truth.
The third eye is not situated on Lord Ganesh’s forehead, but on his trunk, which makes the idol unusual. The placement of the eye enhances the spiritual significance, emphasizing the deity’s ability to oversee and guide devotees with wisdom.
5. Vehicle of Lord Ganesh:
According to Hindu mythology, the mouse is considered to be the vahan of Lord Ganesh. The mouse symbolises the ability to face obstacles and overcome them. In the Siddhivinayak temple, the mouse, made of silver, is placed near Lord Ganesh.
Devotees believe that whispering a wish to mice for years goes directly to Lord Ganesh and never goes unheard.
