WhatsApp Rival Telegram has reportedly updated its FAQ and removed privacy-related content from its platform’s chat. This quiet decision comes days after the arrest of its founder, Pavel Durovin France for “crimes committed by third parties” on the messaging app.
On Thursday, the messaging app began rolling out changes to its moderation policy. “All Telegram apps have ‘Report’ buttons that allow you to flag illegal content to our moderators, in just a few taps,” the company said on its updated FAQ page.
Telegram has also provided an email address for automatic removal requests, instructing users to include links to content that requires the moderator’s attention.
In response to a DB news post on social media platform X, which reads: “Telegram quietly updates FAQ and deletes: All Telegram chats and group chats are private between their participants. We do not process any requests related to them,” the Tesla CEO said. Elon Musk responded to the update with a simple comment: “Interesting.”
The messaging app, known for offering “secret” chats with end-to-end encryption, is facing serious charges in France for allegedly failing to prevent illegal activities on the platform. Durov has been accused of complicity in the running of an online platform that enabled illegal transactions by an organised group.
In response to his arrest, Telegram’s CEO posted a critique of the action on his Telegram channel.
“Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to accuse a CEO of crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is the wrong approach,” Durov said.
It is unclear if or how this change will affect Telegram’s ability to respond to law enforcement requests. The company has shared some user information in the past in response to court orders.
