Pregnancy is a time of great physical and emotional changes for women, and the challenges continue even after delivery. New mothers need to focus on their diet, weight, and mental health during the postpartum phase. The postpartum period begins right after delivery, so the first 2-3 months are vital for both mother and baby. During this time, mothers need important care as they return to their pre-pregnancy state, bond with their newborns, breastfeed, and attend regular medical checkups. According to research, postpartum care can extend beyond seven months due to both physical and emotional recovery needs.
We spoke to Dr Madhulika Singh, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, and Dr Nitin Gupte, Gynaecologist, Apollo Spectra, to share essential postpartum care tips for new mums.
Postpartum care:
“Pregnancy is a joyous experience, but postpartum recovery can be overwhelming for many women. Timely care is crucial as conditions like constipation, jaundice, infections, urinary incontinence and postpartum depression can affect a mother’s well-being. Postpartum care involves more than just medical check-ups. It includes maintaining a balanced lifestyle with nutritious diet, regular exercise, stress-reducing activities like yoga and meditation, and getting at least eight hours of quality sleep,” said Dr Madhulika Singh.
Health problems after childbirth:
Dr. Nitin Gupte highlights that new mothers may experience breast pain, weight loss, blood clots and urinary problems, all of which can be distressing. Mental health issues, such as anxiety and mood swings, are also common. Seeking professional help, talking to loved ones and joining support groups can be effective in managing these. Self-care, including rest, nutrition and light exercise, is vital, and addressing mental health issues early can aid recovery.
Key Postpartum Tips:
Rest and recovery:Childbirth, whether vaginal or cesarean, is taxing on the body. Make sure you get plenty of rest, with naps during the day, as nighttime sleep may be interrupted by the baby’s feeding schedule. Accept help from others and delegate household chores.
Healthy diet:Proper nutrition supports both recovery and breastfeeding. Focus on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Stay hydrated and limit caffeine and sugary foods, as these can affect energy and milk production.
Stay activeGentle physical activity, such as walking or postpartum yoga, can enhance recovery. Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen to make sure it is safe for you. Regular activity improves circulation, increases energy, and reduces symptoms of postpartum depression.
Monitoring mental healthHormonal changes after childbirth can lead to mood swings or postpartum depression. It’s important to talk about your feelings and seek support when you need it. Join a support group or confide in loved ones – asking for help is a sign of strength.
Establish a routineWhile flexibility is important, creating a routine for feeding, sleeping and self-care can provide stability and help both mother and baby adjust.
Good hygiene:Proper hygiene after childbirth is essential to prevent infection. Follow medical advice for wound care (from a caesarean section or episiotomy), keep the perineal area clean and change pads regularly. Always practice hand hygiene, especially when handling your newborn.
