The efforts and love that devotees put into preparing these 56 food items show their immense devotion towards Lord Krishna.
What is Chappan Bhog?
Chappan Bhog is a sacred dish of sattvic food offered to Lord Krishna during Janmashtami. This unique spread includes dishes that encompass all five tastes (sweet, sour, pungent, salty and bitter) along with umami, creating a divine and well-balanced feast.
Importance of Chappan Bhog on Janmashtami
It is said that one day, Lord Indra, the God of rain and thunder, caused incessant rain due to his anger in Gokul, the hometown of Lord Krishna, resulting in floods and destruction. To protect the population, Lord Krishna held the entire Govardhan Mountain on the tip of his little finger and provided shelter to everyone.
People believed that he held up the mountain for 7 days, which is a true miracle that is remembered even today. In the end, Lord Indra surrendered his ego at the feet of Lord Krishna and life returned to normal in Gokul. As Krishna skipped his 8 daily meals for 7 days, the villagers, out of gratitude and love, promised to offer him a feast of 56 food items. Since then, 56 food items became auspicious to appease the deities for centuries.
