Speaking on the eve of the ten-day festivities, Shinde expressed hope that Lord Ganesha showers blessings on all. Maharashtra’s heritage and culture are on display during this festival, he said, and appealed to people to preserve its legacy.
He also asked Ganesh devotees to provide assistance to the needy and underprivileged sections of the society. Maharashtra is the engine of India’s growth and the state will lead the ‘Viksit Bharat’ with the blessings of the deity, the chief minister said.

Authorities had received 3,358 applications from Ganesh mandals (groups celebrating the festival in public places) and permission to set up pandals had been granted to 2,635 mandals till Friday, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said. Another 300 applications were pending approval, he said.
Many mandals brought their Ganpati idols with grand processions in the last two or three days.
The idols will be installed in homes and pandals with rituals on Saturday.
The vegetable markets at Crawford Market, Lohar Chawl and Dadar were packed throughout the day with people flocking to buy flowers, sweets, puja materials and decorative items.
Bright and colourful lights have already illuminated streets and alleys in Lalbaug, Parel, Girgaon, Andheri, Chembur, Fort and other areas that are home to famous Ganapati mandals.
Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit some of the most popular pandals, such as the ‘Lalbaugcha Raja’, during the ten-day festival. Other well-known mandals in the area include Chinchpokli, Ganesh Gully and Tejukaya.
The Matunga-based GSB Seva Mandal, known for its gold-bejewelled Lord Ganesha, is considered to be one of the richest mandals. Nearly 15,000 police personnel will be deployed over the next ten days to ensure security, officials said, PTI reported.
