CBSE schools are advised to strictly follow NCERT books for grades 9 to 12.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE High School) has recently issued a directive requiring all CBSE schools to use NCERT Textbooks for Grades 1 to 8 in the subjects for which these textbooks are available. Schools should be careful when selecting books from private publishers to ensure that they do not contain any content that may be considered objectionable or offensive to any community, gender or religious group.
For grades 9 through 12, schools must use NCERT Certificate textbooks as outlined in the CBSE syllabus. If NCERT or SCERT books are not available for certain subjects, schools should refer to the CBSE books available on the official website. Schools can also use supplementary materials and digital content to enhance their teaching, provided these resources are aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).
According to the official advisory, while using supplementary materials, digital content or books from private publishers, schools must take extreme care to ensure that no content is objectionable or offensive. It is essential to avoid any material that may hurt the sentiments of any class, community, gender or religious group.
The official notice reads: “The following amendments have been made to Chapter 2, Clause 2.4.7 of the 2018 Affiliation Regulations with respect to the position of the rule on the provisions for the use of textbooks by schools and will come into effect from the date of issue of this notice.”
Schools must publish on their website a list of compulsory books for all classes, accompanied by a written statement signed by the principal and administrator. This statement confirms that the content of the compulsory books has been reviewed. If any book is found to contain objectionable content, the school will be held liable and the Board will take action against the institution.
