Arjun Kapoor on Raksha Bandhan: Why aren’t men taught to create a safe environment for sisters to roam around without the need for brothers?
Arjun Kapoor has raised her voice against the lack of security measures for women in the country. On the occasion of Raksha BandhanThe actor urged men to learn and understand the right way to make women feel safe. In a video statement, he pointed out the lack of basic education and understanding in the system.
Arjun said in his video, “I’m about to go celebrate Raksha Bandhan with my sisters, guys. It feels really strange to celebrate a festival with what’s going on, which is all about protecting each other, protecting our sisters, being there for the women in our life, for the women we love, that we care about. While we see so much distress and such a lack of basic understanding and education among a lot of men, when we celebrate Rakhi, we talk about being a brother, about caring. Why aren’t we taught how to make the environment safe enough for all our sisters to roam around without needing a brother? All the while to physically protect and care to be around. Yes, I know the image is something we got used to, that the brother is protective or the man is protective, but I think somewhere we need to teach other men that they need to make women feel safe rather than teaching men to protect women.”
He added: “It’s a much bigger conversation. I think there’s a lot of education. There’s a lot of conversation and there’s a lot of basic understanding that’s missing in our ecosystem. I don’t know how much this will change people’s mindset, but it’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about. Why have they always been told to protect? Why aren’t we told to make them feel safe? It’s something I’ve been thinking about. It’s been floating around in my mind for a long time. Yeah, sometimes you feel like it’s not being discussed too much because people don’t understand it, but I thought I put it out there in the universe. And hopefully, even if it affects or resonates with some people, it’s at least a conversation or a starting point. As a brother, as a man, I feel like we need to change the way we perceive women in our lives. I think somewhere, I feel like men need to be taught how to allow women to feel safe around them, not just be there to protect them. I think it would be a great lesson if we could make the women around us, the girls, feel safe, not just for their safety, but to be around them, to live in their lives.”
She concluded her video by saying, “I just hope that a lot of men think about how to be there for the women in their lives and make them stronger and more powerful by making them feel safe.”
Sharing the video, he wrote: “Watch and reflect.” It comes at a time when Bollywood Celebrities are raising their voices against the horrific rape and murder case in Kolkata.
