Apple is taking major steps to expand its production capacity in India, with plans to hire over 600,000 people by March 2025, according to a report by ET. This ambitious move is part of Apple’s strategy to shift a substantial portion of its global iPhone production out of China due to geopolitical tensions.
Increase in production capacity
Apple has been expanding its manufacturing operations in India, initially focusing on older, entry-level iPhone models. In recent years, the company has begun producing newer models locally. For example, Apple began assembling iPhone 14 models in India during the 2021-2022 period. By 2023, iPhone 15 models made in India were available globally from the start of sales. This expansion included Pegatron taking over production of the iPhone 15 Plus in India, marking a significant step forward in Apple’s manufacturing strategy.
Job creation and employment growth
According to a report by The Economic Times, Apple is on track to directly employ around 200,000 workers in India by the end of the current fiscal year, with women accounting for 70% of this workforce. Apple’s broader ecosystem in India is expected to generate around 500,000 to 600,000 jobs by March 2025. This job creation is driven by the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme introduced in 2020. Since then, iPhone assemblers and suppliers such as Foxconn, Tata, and Pegatron have already created around 165,000 direct jobs in the country.
New manufacturing companies
In a notable shift, Apple will soon begin producing its Pro models in India for the first time. This includes the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which will be manufactured locally for the first time. To support this, Apple has begun training workers at its Tamil Nadu facility to align local production with the global launch. Foxconn, a major Apple partner, is expected to begin assembling these Pro models in India soon after. iPhone 16 Series Launchedscheduled for September 9.
Looking to the future
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that the standard iPhone 17 The development and manufacturing of this device will take place exclusively in India from late 2024, with a launch planned for 2025. Tata Electronics, which has taken over Wistron’s assembly units, will work with Foxconn and Pegatron on this project. Tata Electronics is also expanding its workforce at its Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu, with the aim of hiring 50,000 manual workers, predominantly women.
The move is in line with an earlier Wall Street Journal report, which revealed Apple and its suppliers aim to produce more than 50 million iPhones a year in India over the next two to three years, with plans to ramp up production further in subsequent years.
