Angry Young Men review: An eye-opening docuseries about Salim and Javed that looks at what made the pair so iconic
About Angry Young Men: The Story of Salim and Javed
It is fitting that the documentary series Angry youth:The story of Salim and Javed begins with one of the many classic dialogues of Sholay (1975). “How many people?? asks Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. It has always been two… Salim Khan and Javed Akhtarbetter known as Salim-Javed. The duo remains Bollywood’s most famous screenwriter, largely due to films like Sholay, Deewaar (1975), Trishul (1978), Don (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979) and many more. In 1982, the two broke off their successful relationship, never really speaking about their separation.
Now, four decades later, the two veteran writers reflect, in their inimitable style, on their past, hit films and their relationship over time. Interestingly, the three-part series is produced by Salim and Javed’s sons, who have gone on to become influential in Bollywood. Salim’s sons Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan, and the sons of Javed, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya AkhtarThey talk about how their partnership impacted their lives while also discussing their legacy.
Directed by Namrata Rao, Angry youth It also looks at how the writer duo managed to capture the pulse of the audience with their anti-establishment leadership in the 1970s. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt claimed that they “introduced the era of the writer” in Bollywood. Like the documentary series The Romantics, Angry youth presents a who’s who of Bollywood, past and present, commenting on Salim-Javed and how they approach the duo’s films as fans.
But the strength of the documentary series lies in the two men and their families, who dissect their lives and how this seeped into their scripts. Using humour, self-deprecation and a flair for storytelling, they narrate the story of their lives, from the days of struggle to the height of success, when they were paid a lakh rupees more than the star of the film. These incidents are carefully edited with appropriate music and scenes – from where else, their own films!
Apart from their careers, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar also talk about their personal lives, their relationships with their families and more. Of course, the two men talk about their split and the aftermath. The final episode of Angry youth The book addresses the struggles of Bollywood writers today, including emerging scriptwriters who speak about their experiences. It also raises the question of why the industry has not seen superstar writers like Salim-Javed again.
