Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday announced that all vacant posts of Punjabi teachers in government schools will be filled as a priority to further promote the language.
Addressing a gathering during a state-level function to mark Teachers’ Day, the chief minister said there was a need to further promote the Punjabi language.
The state government has a duty to promote the mother tongue of every Punjabi and will spare no effort to achieve this, he said.
Mann also urged students to speak and write in Punjabi so that they remain familiar with their heritage.
The prime minister said vacancies in a large number of posts in the education department were affecting studies.
In keeping with the state government’s commitment to make Punjab a leading state in education, its administration has already taken “pioneering initiatives” to give a boost to the sector. For the first time in Punjab’s history, a large parent-teacher meeting was organised in government schools across the state, Mann said.
Stating that he is there to resolve all the problems faced by the teaching fraternity, Mann said that as the son of a teacher, he was very well aware of the problems of teachers and added that it was his duty to resolve all of them.
The state treasury belongs to the people and every cent of it will be judiciously used for the welfare of all strata of society, he said.
The government is making a major push for comprehensive reform of the education system and regularly sends principals and teachers to prestigious institutes at home and abroad to update their skills, Mann said.
The reason is to ensure that teachers can learn about advanced practices in the education sector around the world, he said.
The schools have been equipped with the latest technology to impart quality education; the ‘Schools of Eminence’ have transformed the fate of the people of the state. For the first time, 158 students from government schools have passed the coveted joint entrance examination, Mann said.
This is just the beginning as more similar results will be seen in the coming days, for which the Punjab government is making great efforts, he added.
