Thailand is known for its charms after sunset. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proudly announced Bangkok’s iconic temple, Arun Templeand Chiang Mai’s Yi Peng Magic Lantern Festival as “Night View World Heritage” sites. The announcement was made at the Japan Night View Tourism Summit in Bangkok, aiming to highlight Thailand’s commitment to showcasing its stunning nightscapes.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand took to its official X account to write: “The Tourism Authority of Thailand proudly announces that Bangkok’s iconic Wat Arun temple and Chiang Mai’s enchanting Yi Peng lantern festival have been recognized as “Night View World Heritage” sites.
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, told the media: “We would like to express our gratitude to YAKEI Convention and Visitors Bureau for these honors. Wat Arun and Yi Peng Festival are two of Thailand’s most iconic historical and cultural heritages that have welcomed thousands of visitors every year. These recognitions will surely highlight their amazing night view charms and inspire more visits from tourists from all over the world.”

Bangkok’s iconic temple on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is one of Thailand’s most visited tourist attractions. Its main pagoda is decorated with porcelain that glistens in the sunlight and is beautifully illuminated every night from sunrise to sunset. It is an international landmark and has been used as a set for several Hollywood movies. It is also considered an icon of the Thai tourism industry, as it appears on the TAT logo.
Another Thai experience you can’t miss is the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai. This lantern festival coincides with the Loi Krathong Festival, which is celebrated across the country during the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. During the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai, you can see colorful lanterns hanging outside houses and temples, flying lanterns, and locals wearing traditional Lanna clothing as they take part in street parades and local celebrations.
The world-famous historical ruins of Ayutthaya, along with Wat Arun and Chiang Mai’s Peng Festival have been recognized as World Heritage Sites Night View.
